Crew of the Righteous Indignation

4. Crew of the Righteous Indignation - Background

(L-R: Deadeye LeDuc, Cap’n Buck, Neko-Ginny, Wu Li, and the Bruiser.)

IN THE ‘VERSE

Herein find the crew of the Righteous Indignation: a sharpshooting former pirate named LeDuc; Cap’nBuck, a Browncoat officer who’s never surrendered; and navigator Neko-Ginny, an astrologer who relies as much on mysticism as star-charts. Teenage engineering wunderkind Wu Li and a mercenary known as The Bruiser round out the cast. Don’t look for them to fight a war so much as make themselves a burr in the Alliance’s boot long after any official ‘treaty.’

If you didn’t grow up in the late 80s, early 90s, then I don’t blame you for not remembering Bucky O’Hare and the Toad Wars. This concept, interestingly, was created by the amazing Larry Hama, longtime writer of GI Joe, Wolverine, and other comics with a military twist.

4. Crew of the Righteous Indignation

The Motley Crew series started out with my desire to draw Elgyn’s mercenaries from the far underrated Alien: Resurrection. It progressed to drawing other Whedon-related science fiction characters in a style that lets them fit into the ‘Verse as established in Firefly/Serenity and has since expanded to any motley science fiction crew. My only remaining rule: the original property should not be ‘uniformed.’ (That makes them less than motley)

Bu Tzi Yi and Woodrow3

(l-r: Bu Tzi Yi, Ham, and Woodrow)

IN THE ‘VERSE

I like the idea of Buh Tzi Yi and Woodrow as unlikely partners from opposite sides of the war (Alliance and Browncoat) now working together in the Border Moons as the law…with a pig living in their cargo bay. The odd couple adventures might never stop!

I thought as long as I was drawing/reinventing various Joss Whedon written properties for the ‘verse, I couldn’t ignore one of the first ones in which cowboys, spacemen and livestock all live alongside one another.

I’ll include two of the pictures I used for costume inspiration:

The sheriff’s badge from ‘The Train Job’

Sheriff Badge

The armour worn by Alliance soldiers in the BDM ‘Serenity’.

Crew of the Valkyrie

2. Crew of the Valkyrie - Background

(L-R) Stitch, Preed, Cale, Akima, Korso, Gung

SOURCE MATERIAL

After drawing the motley crew of an awesome spaceship from one Joss Whedon movie, I thought it would be fun to do the same to those from Titan A.E. but transfer them into the ‘verse of Firefly/Serenity. This necessitated turning Stith, Preed, and Gune into humans, which was great fun!

Many of the themes Whedon would explore later are already in place, including the ‘dirty future’ look. The character and story doesn’t have to change much, save to remove any aliens and epic fantastical elements.

IN THE ‘VERSE

Cale is the descendant of the man who designed terraformers for the ‘verse, a technology that has since become hard to come by. Former Browncoat Captain Korso, his oily first mate Preed, earnest pilot Akima, crabby gunner Stitch, and slightly nuts engineer Gung pick Cale up out of seemingly benign intentions, but a more sinister plot is afoot. Cale holds the key to finding the lost terraforming tech, but just about everyone wants a piece…including Korso and Preed.

Crew of the Betty

1. Crew of the Betty - Background

(L-R: Christie, Sabra Hillard, Johner, Frank Elgyn, Call, and Vriess.)

SOURCE MATERIAL

One of the things I love about the much maligned Alien: Resurrection is how the crew is such a prototype for the Serenity crew, right down to a captain with a cowboy’s slang and a tough-guy with a girl’s name. Drawing this crew out of nothing but fondness is what inspired my ‘Motley Crew’ series. The Betty’s crew fit right into the ‘Verse, but don’t expect them to be quite as principled as the more famous inhabitants.

IN THE ‘VERSE

Frank Elgyn and Christie are co-owners of The Betty. They’ve got Sabra Hillard to fly her, Vriess to keep her running, and Johner to help kill anyone who gets in her way. They’re probably to be found dropping off a cargo of bright young students for the Blue Sun corporation to experiment on or hiring out as mercenaries – anything as long as they get their payday. But the recent addition of activist-with-a-secret Call to the crew as assistant Engineer might bring a sliver of morality to the old warhorses – if they don’t get killed first.

The Semi-Canon Crews series follows the Motley Crew ongoing. The Firefly comics continue to be worthwhile, but I feel like they are focusing too strongly on the original crew of Serenity, who could honestly use a rest. The ‘Verse is a rich place, with many wonderful corners to explore. Why not dive in to the adventures of these semi-canon crews?
