(L-R: Ahko Yue, Lady Mari, Arctur Ran, and Fei Chong)
The Micronauts were a series of toys turned into a fine 1980s comic series written by Bill Mantlo and originally drawn by Michael Golden. Some of the arcs were hit and miss, but I was always struck by the strong character designs and great colours.
This motley crew involves more substantial costume/design changes than any previous, and by far have been some of the most enjoyable! The Micronauts were motley, but theirs was much more of a space opera with aliens and fantastical 70s outfits that had to be ‘roughed up’ quite a bit.
The basics of the story translates reasonably well.
IN THE ‘VERSE
The indomitable ronin Ahko Yue, the deadly noblewoman Lady Mari, and the irrepressible thief known as Fei Chong are in the prisons of the forbidding shipping baron Karza when they meet Arctur Ran. This man out of time has been found adrift in his vessel, The Endeavour, after a cryo-sleep of a century. Now the intrepid foursome voyage from skyplex to border moon – on the run, but dedicating to overthrowing the murderous Karza.
The Motley Crew series started out with my desire to draw Elgyn’s mercenaries from the far underrated Alien: Resurrection. It progressed to drawing other Whedon-related science fiction characters in a style that lets them fit into the ‘Verse as established in Firefly/Serenity and has since expanded to any motley science fiction crew. My only remaining rule: the original property should not be ‘uniformed.’ (That makes them less than motley)
