Crew of the Falcon

9. Crew of the Falcon - Background

(l-r : Lucas Walker, Mistress Lei, Sulu, Il Chupacabra, Piu, and Arty)

It’s been my intention for a long time to complete the Motley Crew series with this homage to one of the greatest dirty-future, ragtag-band-of-misfits, space-westerns of all time. But I doubt I’ll stop here. I’ve still gotta do Vader, Lando and Wedge, anyway.

IN THE ‘VERSE

Mistress Lei’s two indentured servants, Piu and Arty escape an Alliance attack with secret plans. The fugitive seneschal and mechanic connect with the rim-born farmkid Lucas Walker, unwitting heir to an ancient Chinese warrior society. On the run and hoping to rescue Lei from the Alliance, the three procure the services of space smuggler Sulu and his bear of a first mate, Il Chupacabra and rocket off in The Falcon to seek justice and destiny out in the black.

9. Crew of the Falcon

The Motley Crew series started out with my desire to draw Elgyn’s mercenaries from the far underrated Alien: Resurrection. It progressed to drawing other Whedon-related science fiction characters in a style that lets them fit into the ‘Verse as established in Firefly/Serenity and has since expanded to any motley science fiction crew. My only remaining rule: the original property should not be ‘uniformed.’ (That makes them less than motley)

Crew of the Starjammer

100th post! Since I’m currently addicted to Rachel & Miles X-Plain the X-Men, I decided that the latest motley science fiction crew destined for my drawing board were the ever-loving Starjammers!

IN THE ‘VERSE

Pilot Crispin Sommers (second from right) was jailed for a crime he didn’t commit by a villainous Governor. In the hoosegow, he met three deadly denizens with similar stories and a plan was hatched. A ship christened the Starjammer was liberated and the escapees rocketed into the black to take on a new life as daring pirates of the Alliance spacelanes. From left, we have Todd, whose martial skills belie his engineering acumen,; Curry, his pet albino squirrel; Rasta the Longknife, an impeccable swordsman with a transplanted arm; Captain Sommers and his twin pistols; and master scout Ma’mselle Hester Tsiba.
